Alcor-40 2012 Conference

Post by Max.More » Wed Feb 15, 2012 4:56 pm

Five years have passed since Alcor held a conference. 2012 is also Alcor’s 40th year. Both of those factors led me to decide to hold a conference this year. The date and venue are now settled:

When:
Friday October 19 to Sunday October 21, 2012.

Where:
Scottsdale Plaza, 7200 North Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85253.
Rooms are $159/night for single and double rooms.

The conference is an excellent forum where Alcor members and friends can catch up with one another, learn about the latest thinking in cryonics, and visit Alcor. At the same time, my goal is to keep expenses under control, aiming for the event to pay for itself.

I welcome your input: Which speakers and topics would appeal to you? If you have already answered that question elsewhere, you might do it again here so we have a single place where everyone can see the suggestions.

A list of possible speakers already exists, but I’m looking for input from as many of you as possible. Our budget for speaker expenses will be extremely limited, but don’t assume that a well-known speaker will not be available without speaking fees.

Rather than cramming in as many speakers as possible, I plan to leave ample time between sessions. The conversation and networking opportunities are one of the most valuable aspects of conferences.

Can you try to get Sebastian Seung as a speaker?

Presumably this is the Mitteldorf who Google tells me is at the University of Arizona. Hmm, evolutionary biology, programmed aging, environmentalism... Aschwin, on what topic do you see him speaking?

Yes, I can definitely try! He would be a good choice, if he's willing to come without being paid to speak.

Programmed aging.

I praised him for his contribution in Fahy's recent collection of articles on interventive gerontology here:

One session that I very much want to include in the Alcor-40 conference is a panel discussion/debate on optimal diet. This should include experts on various approaches, including the Paleo diet, the Mediterranean diet, vegetarianism, and calorie restriction (not all of these are mutually exclusive).

If you can suggest appropriate experts on any of these approaches, please let me know. If you post here, be sure to also email me at <max@alcor.org> or to call me at 480.905.1906 x113.

Hello all,
I'll be attending the conference and wanted to see how many users of this forum plan to attend.
It would be interesting to learn where everyone is coming from. I'll be leaving the cool, partly cloudy days of Pennsylvania behind and am eager to meet my fellow cryonauts.
